What are TECNIS Multifocal lenses?

As we age, cataracts are inevitable for most of us. At the 5th Avenue Eye Center, we offer TECNIS multifocal lenses that effectively cure cataracts and help you regain the eyesight of your youth!

TECNIS lensThe TECNIS multifocal implantable lens is a premium IOL (intraocular lens). It can replace a natural lens that needs to be removed because of clouding and other damage caused by cataracts.

When we are young (usually under 45), the lens inside the eye can change its shape and easily adjust our focus from distance to near. This precious and extremely complex function of the young lens is known as “accommodation”. This is why people younger than 45 usually don’t require reading glasses. However, after 45, the lens inside the eye will lose its flexibility and we become dependent on reading glasses or bifocals.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed and is replaced with an artificial lens. You have two choices:

  1. Replace it with an older technology lens, which resolves the problem of cloudiness of the vision but does not give you back your youthful vision.
  2. Replace it with a NEW technology lens such as TECNIS Multifocal. This will solve the clouding problem but will also allow you to shift your focus from distance to near like the young natural lens and reduce or completely eliminate the need for reading or distance glasses.

For the best results we will need to determine which of the new technology lenses is best for your individual case. Many different eye conditions exist that may make you a better candidate for one specific lens versus another. We will work with you to figure out which one is ideal for your optimal vision health as well as for your budget!

The Newest Premium Lens Options
Crystalens Advantage

Crystalens Advantage

Crystalens is an increasingly popular choice in IOLs. It mimics the functioning of our natural young lens with a special design that allows the lens to flex along with your eye muscles (accommodation). This allows your eye to focus naturally for near, intermediate and distance vision. Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens. After a Crystalens procedure, many patients will no longer need glasses or contact lenses for reading or working on the computer.

The ReSTOR Lens

The ReSTOR Lens

ReSTOR intraocular lens is a very popular option that allows patients to see objects both near and far. The lens uses a special technology to distribute light. As a result, patients are often freed of having to use glasses for all distances. Also, many patients who have a problem with accommodation choose to replace their natural lenses with ReSTOR for vision correction, even though they don't have a cataract (e.g., presbyopia correction).

The ReZoom Lens

The ReZoom Lens

ReZoom IOL is a popular multifocal refractive IOL that offers patients the ability to see clearly at near, intermediate and far distances. The lens distributes light over those multiple zones to produce a full range of vision correction. The ReZoom lens also offers clear vision in variable lighting conditions.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

The procedure to implant TECNIS multifocal lenses is quick and virtually pain-free. You will need to arrive at our New York City or New Jersey office about an hour before your scheduled surgery. Although you will be fully awake during the procedure, you will be given anesthetic eyedrops to numb the eye. You may also be offered a mild sedative if you’re anxious about the procedure.

phaco_cataract_surgery_new_jersey_incisionDuring cataract replacement surgery, Dr. Ilan Cohen will make a small incision in your eye to reach the lens. Then, he’ll use high-frequency sound waves (a process called phacoemulsification) to break up damaged lens tissue. Finally, he will replace the lenses with TECNIS multifocal lenses. Unlike monofocal lenses, these revolutionary lenses allow for viewing at near, intermediate and long distances.

The whole procedure takes about 15 minutes, and after a short recovery period at the surgical facility (an hour or so), you can be driven home to rest. You will be instructed to use medicated eye drops after the operation to prevent infection and inflammation.
