Am I a LASIK surgery candidate?

Determine If LASIK Surgery Is Right for You
In order to determine your candidacy for New York LASIK surgery or any other form of vision correction surgery, you need to have a screening exam at our New York office. During this visit, which typically takes about 30-45 minutes, you will undergo special tests that will determine if you are a candidate for LASIK laser vision correction surgery and what is the safest and the most effective procedure for you. The screening process for LASIK surgery is virtually painless, and you can rest assured you’re in expert hands with our professional staff.
Why Am I Not a Candidate for LASIK Surgery?
Millions of people around the world have successfully undergone LASIK surgery to correct their vision. Although countless men and women are ideal candidates for LASIK surgery, there are some people who do not qualify for the procedure due to certain medical exclusions, some of which include:
- You must be at least 18 years of age (to ensure that the eye has fully developed and matured)
- Your vision must be stable, infection-free and injury-free for a year prior to surgery
- You must not have a history of severe dry eye syndrome, herpes eye infections, cornea scarring or an autoimmune disorder, such as Lupus or Sjogren’s Syndrome.
- You cannot be pregnant or nursing on the day of surgery.
- You have a large prescription, thin corneas or irregular topography (eye surface map). (In that case other surgical options i.e. Implantable Contact Lens or CLE can be explored)
Our surgeon, Dr. Ilan Cohen, will work with you to determine if you qualify for LASIK surgery. He is a respected medical professional with more than 10 years of experience in the field and he will evaluate your LASIK surgery candidacy quickly and efficiently. If you are not a LASIK surgery candidate, you may still be an excellent candidate for other procedures, which will be presented to you at the time of your screening.
What If I am Not a LASIK Surgery Candidate?
Unfortunately, LASIK surgery is not for everyone. Even if you are not a candidate for LASIK, you may be a candidate for an alternative procedure. Your alternatives may include: Implantable Contact Lens, Clear Lensectomy, PRK or perhaps no surgery at all. Only a comprehensive screening exam can determine your candidacy, so call us to schedule an appointment with our surgeon today. We’ll work with your schedule to find a time that is suitable for you, even if it’s on your lunch break.
At New York's Fifth Avenue Eye Center, we’re committed to providing quality eye care to all of our LASIK surgery patients. Whereas other one-stop-shop eye centers only provide one type of LASIK surgery, we specialize in offering a diverse range of surgical options so that our clients feel that they can make a unique decision based on their individual needs, not on the financial needs of some corporation. Your vision is one of your most cherished possessions and we’ll do everything in our power to ensure that you have a rewarding LASIK experience in our office.
