LASIK Technology

What are the LASIK Eye Surgery NJ & NY technologies?

Laser vision correction technology has evolved very rapidly since it was introduced more than 20 years ago. In general, at the core of the procedure is the Excimer Laser machine which modifies the curvature of the cornea. There are many different companies with competing technologies. We, at 5th Avenue Eye Center, are able to offer you the latest cutting-edge technologies for your LASIK eye surgery NJ and NYC.

Wavefront Technology (Customvue, Custom LASIK):

This laser technology provides a solution for the natural aberrations (imperfections) of the eyes.

If we want to improve your vision beyond 20/20, we need to eliminate these aberrations that interfere with the perfect focusing of light on the retina. The Wavefront machine measures not only the prescription of your eyes, but also the individual Wavefront aberrations. The computer then plots a specific laser treatment pattern aimed at resolving these aberrations along with the prescription (something not possible with contacts or glasses). This means we can potentially obtain visual acuities that are better than 20/20.

Clinical studies show that this technology produces 20/20 vision in more than 98% of the patients, and a large part of them obtain better than 20/20. It is also better in eliminating or reducing the incidence of glare and haloes. However, it is only available to appropriate candidates, based on prescription and other factors. During your evaluation, Dr. Cohen will determine if Wavefront LASIK eye surgery NJ or NY would benefit your unique vision problem.

Bladeless LASIK (Intralase, All Laser Lasik):

Bladeless LASIK | Manhattan LASIK | LASIK Eye Surgery NJDuring LASIK eye surgery NJ and NY, a flap is created. The laser treatment is performed under this flap and, at the end, the flap is repositioned. This flap can be created in two ways. When the flap is made using a fine-tuned mechanical instrument, called a microkeratome, it is called LASIK. When the flap is made using a second laser machine instead of the microkeratome, it is called “bladeless” LASIK, Intralase, or all-laser LASIK.

Surgeons have debated for years about which of these technologies produces superior results. In our experience, both can produce excellent results in the appropriate patient if tailored to that patient’s individual eyes. Neither one can produce better results consistently for everyone. This must be evaluated for each individual patient and is never the same for all patients. There are pros and cons for each one of these two technologies.

Unfortunately, this academic debate has been tainted with the misleading marketing tactics that some centers use to attract more customers. They use the fear of the “blade” to scare people and to make it look as if the laser-created flap is best for everyone. Their claim to fame is that they use the bladeless technology for every patient. This is nothing more than a marketing gimmick and has no academic merit. Although there are patients who will benefit greatly from the Intralase technology, most patients don’t need it and will even expose themselves to complications that never existed with the older technology. Is bladeless LASIK eye surgery NJ or NY right for you? Dr. Cohen will help you decide.

No flap Procedure (no cutting, LASEK, Epi-LASIK, PRK):

Difference between LASIK and PRKThe same exact laser technology that is used with both LASIK and bladeless LASIK (or Intralase) is used here, but no corneal flap is made. What occurs is that the “cover” over the cornea (also called the epithelium) is painlessly removed in only a few seconds, giving the surgeon access to the unobstructed corneal surface. At this point the laser is used to reshape the cornea, just as it is done in the LASIK or Intralase procedures. The epithelium will grow back on its own within a few days, helped by a clear “bandage” contact lens and some eye drops. While the healing time may take a little longer than with other procedures, the results of no flap procedures such as Epi-LASIK, LASEK, and PRK are generally the same as with the alternative LASIK NJ and LASIK NY procedures.

As with any other laser vision correction procedure, “no flap LASIK” is not recommended for everyone, but this may be the best option for you if you:

  • Have inadequate corneal thickness for the creation of a flap.
  • Have significant problems with dry eyes.
  • Suffer with a damaged or weak cover (or skin) of the cornea due to your age, an old infection or injury, or scar tissue.
  • Work in an industry where eye injuries are more likely to happen (police officer, athlete, etc).

Some regard this as a “safer” procedure since the complications associated with making the flap are eliminated. Again, Dr. Cohen will evaluate your vision problems to determine if the no-flap LASIK eye surgery NJ or NY would be appropriate for you.
