What is LASIK surgery?
The term LASIK is actually an acronym for a much longer title: Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. LASIK surgery involves creating a flap in the cornea of the eye to reshape it in an effort to correct vision problems. There are several ways to accomplish LASIK vision correction, including with a microkeratome (a blade device) or a laser keratome (laser device). During the New York LASIK surgery, a flap is cut into the cornea, with a hinge at one corner. The flap is folded back to expose the stroma (middle part of the cornea) and then laser pulses are used to reshape the tissue as needed to correct vision conditions. At the conclusion of New York LASIK surgery, the flap is replaced and your eye heals in a matter of a few days.
