Manhattan LASIK Surgery

Manhattan LASIK Surgery

In Manhattan, LASIK surgery is offered through a number of surgeons based in this part of New York City. You may have noticed that some centers focus on how many patients they can fit into their schedules each week, making patients feel more like cattle than people. Not at The Fifth Avenue Eye Center, though -- we treat you as an individual. From your first consultation with us in our Manhattan office, we’ll take the time to clearly explain your LASIK surgery options to put your mind at ease.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a leading vision correction surgical procedure that is quick, virtually painless and considered to be extremely safe. The term LASIK is actually an acronym for a longer phrase: Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. Basically, this means that Dr. Cohen will use a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye to create improved vision. The cornea can get misshapen over the years as you age, causing myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). LASIK surgery uses micro-medical technology to permanently correct these issues.

Is This Type of Surgery Considered Major or Minor?

LASIK surgery has been proven effective in millions of cases and its complication rate is typically lower than five percent. It is also an outpatient surgery that requires no hospital stay or total anesthesia. In this sense, this surgery can be thought of as relatively minor. However it is important to take every surgical procedure very seriously and to follow Dr. Cohen’s orders to the letter to avoid complications and reduce risks. As with any other surgeries there are risks which will be discussed with you before the surgery. Our job is to provide you with the sharpest vision at the lowest risk.

Will I Be Awake for LASIK Surgery?

The day of surgery, you will be offered a mild sedative to relax you during the procedure. You’ll also be administered anesthetic drops in each affected eye. The procedure will be completed in less than 20 minutes and you will notice an immediate improvement in your vision. After about an hour of rest, you can be driven home to rest and can go back to work as soon as the next day.
