Presbyopia - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments
Presbyopia is a process that is age dependent and effects everyone starting somewhere between 40-50 years of age. It leads to difficulty with reading even in people who had perfect vision all their lives.
Imagine that your eyes are like a camera. When you take a picture you need to focus the camera for the appropriate distance. In the older cameras this needed to be done manually, but the newer cameras do it automatically (auto focus). Your eyes are like an auto focus camera when you are young. The lenses inside the eyes are flexible. They can change their shape and move back and forth in the eyes in response to a muscular contraction. However, as we grow older our lenses looses their flexibility and cannot move very well in response to the muscular contraction. Therefore, we become dependent on reading glasses.
Solutions:
After Laser Vision Correction:
It is still possible to see distance and near without glasses after Laser Vision Correction. Dr. Cohen will use a special technique that will allow you to use your eyes for both distance and near after the surgery. The effect of this technique will be clearly demonstrated to you before the exam to make sure that you are going to be happy with the outcome after the surgery.
After cataract surgery:
There are a number of different technologies that Dr. Cohen can use in order to allow you to have a good near and distance vision without glasses or contacts after cataract surgery. During cataract surgery your natural cloudy lens is replaced with an implanted lens. The type of lens that is used has a major impact on your freedom from glasses after the surgery. There are a number of different technologies that are available. The choice of the lens has to be tailored to your individual eyes. Dr. Cohen will explain to you more about what you should expect after the surgery at the time of the exam. These next generation lenses include: Restor, Crystalens and Rezoom.
